Game reviewsBloodrayne Call Of Duty Contract J.A.C.K. Doom 3 Far Cry No One Lives Forever No One Lives Forever 2 Tomb Raider: Angel Of Darkness Wars & Warriors: Joan Of Arc |
Set in World War 2, Call Of Duty affords you the opportunity to play three different roles; American soldier,
British soldier and Russian soldier. This adds a lot of variety to the game and allows you a unique insight into
the war, from three very different perspectives. Built on a highly modified Quake 3 engine, the graphics and animation
are top notch in all aspects. Each of the three characters represent a separate chapter in the game, each being
set in specific locations and comprised of numerous missions. The missions are well-thought out and structured and
there is plenty of variety therein. The gameplay is very intense and exciting, with never a dull moment. Even when things
are quiet, you will be wondering what is wrong and where the next attack will come from. The sound effects and
music are perfect, they draw you right into the atmosphere from the word go. The weapons look, sound and function
as realistically as you would find in any game. The AI is another aspect that really stands out. This game has to have
the best balance of realism and gameplay I have ever seen before. While some of the missions are so hard they'll have you
reload quite often at crucial points, it is always very believable (word of advice, time your quick saves properly).
If there's one complaint I have with this game, very minor though, it is that the AI of your allies is sometimes questionable.
For example, whenever you have to operate a heavy artillery gun, they often don't give you enough covering fire from enemy troops,
yet they have no problem shouting instructions at you while you're being shot to pieces. Still, with a little bit of practice
you'll be able to pick off the enemy soldiers that swarm around you during the brief pauses between tank or plane attacks.
It's all about timing and becomes a bit mechanical after a while, but at least it only happens in a few missions and sometimes
your comrades will actually surprise you and do their jobs properly. Overall though, this game is a fine example of what can
be achieved with a little extra effort. It also proves that games don't need far-fetched bosses to be challenging, it is
possible to provide challenge with realistic gameplay. In conclusion, Call Of Duty must surely be the top title in the
over-saturated WW2 market and is one of the best 1st-person shooters period. © Action Girls 2004.
