Bloodrayne review

Great action game with a supernatural flavour. You play Agent Bloodrayne, a Dhampir(half-vampire) employed by The Brimstone Society, an organisation which investigates paranormal occurrences. Gameplay features include 3rd-person perspective, ranged and melee combat and lots more. As a character, Rayne is an interesting combination of human compassion and vampiric ruthlessness. She has a lot of attack abilities which get unlocked as the game progresses. I really enjoyed the cutscenes and the weapons system which allows for different weapon combinations, something which is not found in very many games. It's also cool that you have the freedom to play the way you want throughout the game, you are never forced to use a specific type of combat(unless you run out of ammo). My favourite weapon is the harpoon, you can even use it in mid-jump to knock an enemy down before they can shoot. If you are quiet enough, you can eavesdrop on conversations between enemies, ala No One Lives Forever. Another cool thing is that Rayne's dialogue is less politically correct than most other characters(she doesn't mynce words - pardon the pun), it's quite refreshing for a change. Some people have complained that the game gets repetitive after a while, but I think the gameplay is unique and inventive enough to provide fun throughout, even if you mostly fight 1 kind of enemy (nazis). The violence is so over the top it's almost cartoonish, I don't know how anyone can get bored of that. Besides, it's impossible to get tired of looking at Rayne ;) © Action Girls 2004.
